NOTES ON THE ALBUM
The Dustfolk Suite is a symphonic work in seven movements telling the story of an adolescent deaf girl named Misty, who at the age of thirteen receives cochlear implants and discovers the world of sound. The complete story is written as a novel entitled MARCH OF THE DUSTFOLK, forthcoming as of the album’s release. The story features many fantastical elements: Misty is contacted by the General of an army of tiny, invisible people living in her floorboards—the “Dustfolk”—who seek her help against a tyrannical enemy called the Slithers. Each movement in the symphonic suite offers a musical poem about a character or event in the story. The cornerstone movement is the third, entitled “Misty’s New World,” written to capture Misty’s joy and elation as she begins hearing for the first time. The second main theme is fully expressed in the sixth movement, “March of the Dustfolk,” written to convey the resilience and determination of the Dustfolk as they head into battle. I hope listeners will enjoy this musical story and glimpse the joys, fears, hopes, and fantasies in Misty’s heart.
