NOTES ON THE ALBUM
Cuban Art Song Project’s debut album, Se fue, gives voice to the longings, humor, and landscape of a Cuba that only exists in memory. Se fue translates to “he left” or “it went away.” This could mean the break up of a romantic relationship or the loss of something more existential, like a sense of identity. For many Cubans, the country they knew and loved went away without an opportunity to say goodbye. This album is an attempt to resurrect the music Cubans of the 1950s would recognize for the benefit of their children and grandchildren.
Se fue, celebrates the compositions of the great Cuban maestro, Ernesto Lecuona. Known as the “Gershwin of Cuba,” Lecuona writes melodies that are fantastically memorable and marries them to traditional Cuban rhythms. CASP presents brand new arrangements by Pablo Zinger, brought to life by Cuban American soprano Isabella Lamadriz. Latin percussion phenom, Takafumi Nikaido and Latin Grammy Winning bassist, Pedro Giraudo round out the ensemble for CASP’s debut album.
